UEFA pledge to pump €1bn into women’s football 2030: it’s a strong plan

UEFA has pledged €1bn to support women’s football. They aim to have six fully professional leagues by 2030. This is part of their new strategy for women’s football 2030.

The goal is to make football the most popular team sport for women and girls in UEFA countries by 2030. They also want to have 5,000 fully professional players in Europe by then.

In 2023-24, there were 3,049 fully professional players. This was in three fully professional leagues across Europe, including England’s Women’s Super League.

A professional player is defined as someone with a written contract. They are a full-time paid employee and don’t need to earn extra from football.

Since 2019, UEFA has seen a 20% increase in investment by member associations. In 2022-23, this investment reached €164m.

The top 20 women’s clubs in Europe had a budget of €174.2m in 2023-24. Clubs spent US$4.8m on international player transfers in 2023. This is an 85% increase from 2022.

Viewership of the Women’s Champions League increased by 157% between 2021-22 and 2023-24. Also, 17 clubs set new attendance records in the Champions League between those years.

The strategy focuses on improving player welfare and developing talent. It includes launching a continent-wide talent ID programme.

Nadine Kessler, UEFA’s women’s football  chief, writes in her introduction. She notes the game’s growth and achievements. But she also highlights the challenges and barriers women and girls still face.

“There are still persistent challenges and obstacles to overcome,” Kessler says. “In some countries, women and girls face significant barriers to participation. Even with the game’s rapid rise, many struggle to make a living from it.”

Kessler believes the game is entering an exciting new era. The goal is to be financially sustainable. This will help reinvest in the game and establish the women’s football 2030 industry.
